It was great to get him in the Hardaway trade especially since Nico was trying to acquire home at the trade deadline last year but the Knicks wouldn’t trade him at that time.
Knicks fans aren't too high on Grimes, that's what worries me a little. Apparently at the end of his tenure with the Knicks, he was lacking confidence to put up shots and was also complaining publicly about his role, which contributed to him getting shipped to Detroit.
Honestly, I'm not too worried about that. As I wrote in the article, we've seen this exact archetype succeed in Dallas with Luka. I think healthy is a bigger concern and hopefully we see him 100% back this season.
You write that Grimes hasn't shown the ability to fight over screens. And Naji (being bigger) won't be doing that either. So since both guys, who are supposed to be the p.o.a defenders lack that ability, should we expect a major change in defensive strategy/philosophy from the Mavs?
Opposing offenses will now find it easier to matchup hunt Luka & Kyrie. Maybe the Mavs lean further into staggering their minutes?
My own idea for the best rotation involves limiting the amount of time that Klay, Luka, & Kyrie are all out on the floor together. allot 96-100 minutes to those 3 players; 36 for Luka, 32 for Kyri & Klay. Then you're able to stuff 3 other positions with plus defenders.
Not that they have not shown that ability, my point was Grimes is not as good at it as DJJ. I would still rank him as an adequate to good on-ball defender defending picks...and he is very good at some other areas I mentioned (drive, switch,...)

yeah, I was very surprised (positively) they managed to get him in the Hardaway trade.

He doesn’t miss. Of all our moves, QG is who I’m most excited to watch.
We'll see about missing...but I think if healthy he could be a great under the radar pickup
Haha. That was poorly written. You, sir, don’t miss. Great article. Enjoyed as always.
