Two other signings that would tend to back up your analysis of the Nico-Kidd 2 big model.

1. The failed signing (at the expense of a 1st round pick) for Christian Wood in 2021, and

2. The absolute failed signing of Javale McGee in 2022, which included promising him a starting role on the team. Both of these moves seemed to be more Kidd than Nico, so perhaps in the earlier years of their reign Nico was swayed by Kidd's outdated team-building philosophy.

Nico's moves in retrospect, seem to all have relations back to his time at Nike in the AAU basketball realm. He had known Kai for years, He was very familiar with both PJ and Gaff from there as well. His philosophy and structure is more one of personal friendships and Nike-AAU leanings than based on any prevalent knowledge of team building in the sense we use it.

Luka never fit the AAU model. Most Euro players don't. Combine that with ownership who has only interest in a casino in Texas and the BB team is simply a vehicle to make them even richer.

All that adds up to really low IQ group of professional team builders.

Thanks for the highlights--just a pleasure to watch two of the best in the NBA go at each other. Great night by both players ending in a jersey swap that probably made most Mavs fans weep!

"Beyond foolish," is an apt description of the trade.

yeah, if you remember (and I mentioned it a couple of times in my articles), Nico & Kidd started their Mavs tenure with 2-big strategy playing KP at the PF next to Powell.

I do remember that for sure! It was always a failed strategy as near as I could tell.

Did the Mavs go to the finals in 22?

Nope, 'only' to WCF. But I have a feeling if they would surround Luka and Brunson (or Kyrie) with hard working role players they might. Wait...didn't they?

Unbelievable that Nico didn’t at a minimum let the season play out. I wouldn’t let him run a franchise on NBA2k

If you play NBA2k you know the value of ballhandlers lol

lol exactly. The Mavs biggest problem at one point was having a secondary ball handler. They had that with kyrie and Brunson at different points. The fact he took away having a second ball handler(not signing Brunson, trading away Luka) is insanity.

Ouch. But spot on analysis. This will be a Harvard business case of what not to do. I also lay this at Kidd’s feet. Nico and Kidd were a package deal, both talked about the 2020 bubble Lakers as if they were an all time great team, and both made the ludicrous decision to let Jalen walk, signed McGee and guaranteed him a STARTING SPOT and then traded Luka. Nico owns this, but Kidd is a named co-conspirator. BTW, Jalen has the “Mamba mentality” Nico claims to love, and he let him walk for nothing. Kyrie was a terrific pick up, but I would still rather have a younger Jalen with Luka. At this point, I’m inclined to credit the Gafford and PJ trades to Dennis Lindsey, who left before the season started. Because this is ridiculously bad decision making.

ANybody notice how all this team building philosophy, memba mentality talk centers around one team- the lakers... And they just gave him the best young stud in the NBA. Seems like a play for laker job positions once Luka retires

One additional note: On the Bill Simmons podcast , a business consultant, Joe House, said that the estimated economic loss from the Luka trade would be over a $billion. His actual estimate was between 1.5 and 2 billion revenue loss caused by this trade.

According to Simmons, the Nico Harrison has now moved into 2 place as the worst contract in the NBA, trailing only Bradley Beal
