I just can’t believe this trade. This is a heartbreaker for anyone that loves the Mavs. It’s terrible that the front office decided (or owners demanded) that this generational talent had to be traded. Taking a step back, how do you get this measly return for a player of this caliber?! Any NBA team would do this trade from the Lakers side 100x out of 100. A 31 year old injury prone really good player traded for a generational superstar. It’s too bad that Cuban gave up his full ownership stake; it’s difficult to believe he would have approved it. The Mavs got to the Finals LAST YEAR! Unfuckingbelievable.

Shocking and crazy...all I can say now. More tomorrow

None of the reasons given for this trade make any sense and each one can be debunked with even a cursory analysis. There has to be other reasons that are not known (and may never be known) for this trade. It would be great to get your analysis and insight on this trade and whether you think the rational given for it even make sense. I’ll keep following Luka on the Lakers and if you focus more of your work on the Lakers then I’ll follow that also because your content is great.

Hi Nabeel. I'll try to write more on the reasons soon...but not sure you'll like it. Thanks for your suppport, means A LOT!

I am heartbroken 💔 I am gutted thinking of Luka hearing this. I have grown to love Slovenia, and imagined celebrating with Luka both in Dallas and there. I can’t believe it will never happen that way. This is a nightmare. Why???? I’m having such a hard time wrapping my mind around Dallas without Luka.😓 Heartbroken. 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔

This is the part, especially of the American sports that I otherwise love, that sucks. Talk about assets, transactions, trades...when you have fans, and players that embraced the city

Iztok, I have loved being a subscriber and your content is something I look forward to daily. And I will remain a subscriber regardless of your next moves. But if you take your coverage to the Lakers I will continue to look forward to it. My son was born the year Luka was drafted. They were supposed to grow up together. So for his sake, my loyalty lies with Luka. I hope this is such a failure for Nico that he goes back to selling shoes. Hang in there, we're all in this together.

Thanks for this Justin! Really appreciate. We'll figure it out, I'm sure

Whatever you decide to do I will understand, but I m really hoping you will keep some connection with Mavs and Mavs fans.

That's the plan!

There's too much to say about this, but I'm sad we will never see this team with Luka taking on this historic OKC team.

Keep up the good work Iztok. Yes trades get attention but I subscribe for the game analysis

And I love doing that. And hope to do it soon...just for now, too much to figure out and stuff happening in next week.

And thanks!

Don't get me wrong, your trade outlook is fun as well :)

It's just that smart game analysis will always be more niche than (smart) trade talk, so I wanted you to know that it's appreciated 👍

Iztok, I always appreciate reading your columns. You bring a lot of different aspects and angles to your stories. I can’t imagine the Mavericks are done and that another trade or another shoe will drop bringing another quality player to the team hopefully young as they just got six years older with AD. Ty

Just a note of appreciation for all the work you do. I don't know where everything goes from here, but I really enjoy the insights you bring.

Like everyone else, I'm trying to make sense of how there was (somehow) a loss of faith between Mavericks leadership and Luka enough to make this deal happen. Looking forward to your takes and trying to separate fact from fiction in the coming efforts to spin the news.

Thanks man, really appreciate. Certainly wont be boring trying to figure all this out in the next weeks...

“A gut punch like never before” was well said by Steve. I feel like a train hit me. I have always been a Mavs fan but my investment and joy in this franchise grew significantly during these Luka years. It has been an awesome journey and one you made even better last year with your X observations and then this year you took it to a whole new level. Thank you! The team make up and your analysis was and IS so much fun. Maybe we will all wake up soon to discover it was just a nightmare.

Also - Like Filip said I really enjoy your game analysis as well as ~10 game stat check ins the most. Your trade deadline comment in this article surprised me but I get it. We all really appreciate you!

I think there's so much to unpack and so much that will happen in the next week...so kind of hard to think & write about that and do all game stuff. After that we'll see how we continue...

We support whatever you decide to do with this Substack. I just wanted you to know that we like all your stuff and appreciate the work you put in everyday. Did not want to imply we wanted game observations during this time. Frankly it will be hard (if possible) to watch these upcoming games. Not sure I have it in me right now.

Thanks Jarrod...your support was always off the charts, from day one, Loved it. And off all others here. We'll have more fun, I'm sure!

I feel horrible for you and the Mavs podcasters. I’m sure there are so many that feel the same as me. Nico ruined this franchise. Had he received equal value I can understand being aggressive and making a change. The guy was pretty much pitching a shut out since his arrival. But he received pennie’s on the dollar. He didn’t even shop the trade. How can he be so clueless? I celebrated the day Cuban was no longer in charge. I can’t help but root against Nico and the team I have followed so passionately for 40 years.

I started to comment yesterday, but needed a day to process this. Thanks for all the work you have put into this substack. Your writing has been my go to for the season. I cannot wrap my head around this trade and the chaos that it has brought. I tried to watch the game yesterday and was just not that interested--I assume that will change somewhat, but I really hate this!

I will support you in whatever direction you decide to go!

Thanks Terry...you support from Day 1 of this, and everyone else shows what some people fail to understand. That sports connects people, it goes way beyond the business, transactional level...to human, emotional level. And that is what it makes it great. We hope together, we have fun together, we celebrate success together...and we grief together.
